The Brief
NEWSUBSTANCE were engaged by Balich Worldwide Shows to design and deliver two large scenic pieces for the prestigious ceremony celebrating the 500th anniversary of the formation of the Kazakh Khanate in Astana, Kazakhstan.
Event Statistics
The ceremony was performed at the newly-built Barys Ice Arena in Astana for an exclusive audience of c.7000 guests including President Nazarbaev and invited Heads of State from the region. A cast of 3600 performers brought the story to life supported by dedicated production team in just over 6 short weeks.

The Outcome
NEWSUBSTANCE designed two pieces: a bespoke 6m giant mirror tiled ball comprising an inflatable skin, socked in an industrial net and finished with close to 2000 mirror tiles. This constant blown piece was flown in for the shows finale, representing the large sphere that will form the centre piece of Kazakhstan’s 2017 Expo celebrations as host nation. In addition to this we designed and delivered a 3m gold sphere – also constantly blown – that represented the gold mirrored sphere atop the iconic Bayterek in the centre of Astana.
